Day 1 finds us at the Michigan Union on State Street & South University. Check-in begins at 8am in the first floor lobby. Enter through the State Street entrance (pictured here) and head up a half flight of stairs to reach the lobby. After checking in, you’ll find the free continental breakfast in the Union Opera Lounge (first floor). The first floor also has a Starbuck’s and Au Bon Pain if you need your triple venti soy machiatto fix.
*Check-in runs from 8am-5pm Thursday at the Union, 8am-5pm Friday at the League, and 8am-12pm Saturday at the League.
Use the hashtag #iwac16 during the conference.
Pre-conference workshops are held on the first floor starting at 8:30am. Workshops in Anderson rooms (A B C and D) are right across the hall from our breakfast spot in the Opera Lounge. The Pond room is off of the main hallway towards Au Bon Pain.
Lunch for pre-conference workshop participants and mentoring groups is held on the second floor in the Rogel Ballroom. Mentoring group tables are numbered, so check for the one assigned to you. Mentoring group participants can check in with an IWAC host to be reminded of the group number assigned. If your mentor or mentee is missing, feel free to join the nearest group at your table. Other conference goers can check the Restaurants tab on our A2 Guide for recommendations. The Bars tab also contains several restaurants that happen to serve drinks.
Conference Sessions & Plenary
Our conference sessions begin after lunch. Most sessions are located on the first floor with a few sessions on the second floor. Check your program guide for details. Coffee will be available throughout the day in the Opera Lounge. We’ll close out our time in the Union with the first Plenary Session at 5:30pm upstairs in the Rogel Ballroom.
After the Plenary Session, head out of the main State Street entrance/exit and walk across State St. to the UMMA (University Michigan Museum of Art) for the opening reception from 7-9pm. The reception entrance is located at the original UMMA building on the right with columns (pictured here); do not use the entrance on the attached modern building. We’ll have signs and a few people guiding the way.
After the reception
After the reception consider a quick detour through the arches of the picturesque Law Quad, just south of UMMA, or spin the Cube located behind the Michigan Union just off of the walkway on the northwest side of the building.
You can stroll through the Diag and up Ingalls Mall to Summerfest, held in front of our Friday/Saturday conference site at the Michigan League. Thursday night features the pop band Air Traffic Controller starting at 8:30pm, followed by an outdoor screening of the popular movie Amelie at 10pm.
We hope you enjoy your first day at IWAC 2016 and in Ann Arbor!
